uncodebar Scotland 2023

Saturday 18th November | 10:30 - 17:00 GMT

We are so excited to be bringing uncodebar to Glasgow. Uncodebar is our one-day unconference that encourages the codebar community to come together, share knowledge, and strengthen the community that supports our workshops.

At an unconference:

- no topics predetermined

- no keynote speakers

- no panels or working groups

+ collaboration

+ no agenda until the day

+ freedom & discussion

The event

An unconference is a "loosely structured open space event emphasising the informal exchange of information and ideas between participants."

The heart of our event lies in the vibrant contributions and enthusiasm of attendees.

You propose talks, workshops, and panels and decide what topics will be discussed. Then people convene in separate breakout sessions. In other words, an unconference has no agenda until the morning when participants create it.

Types of sessions

📅 The longer formal presentation:

This is tricky, because it’s difficult to make a formal presentation interactive. But if you have a big, well-developed idea you can pull it off.

⏲ A short presentation to get things started:

5-15 minutes of prepared material/comments by the session leader followed by an interactive discussion.

💬 Group discussion:

Someone identifies a topic they are interested in, others come to join the conversation and an interesting discussion happens.

❔ My Big (or Little) Question:

You have a question you want to know the answer to, and you think others in the group could help you answer it. This format could also just be the seed of a conversation.

📺 Show and tell:

You have a cool project, a demo, or just something to show and let people play with that is the springboard for all the conversation in the session. Alternatively, you can invite others to bring their own items to show and tell (perhaps with a theme), and everyone takes a turn sharing.

📖 Learn how to do X:

If you’re inclined to teach, this can be simple and effective. Bring the equipment that you need, and have a plan that will let you teach five, ten, or 15 people how to do something all at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does codebar have a Code of Conduct?

Absolutely, and we take it very seriously. Please take a read here.

How much does it cost to attend uncodebar?

It is 100% free! We are really lucky to have some great companies who support uncodebar and ensure all our events remain free, forever!

I'd love to attend in Glasgow but I can't afford the travel, is codebar able to help?

If you are in the UK, we may have some budget to pay for your travel. Please fill in this form. Unfortunately, if you're outside the UK, we don't have budget. We would love to help everyone but securing sponsorship this year has been tougher than ever before.

Is this event virtual or in-person?

This event is just in person.

Will sessions be recorded?

Nope. The whole goal of an unconference is that it is personal, and intimate. We record lots of other amazing sessions, please check them out on our YouTube.

How do we become a sponsor of uncodebar?

We are always looking for amazing companies to come on board and sponsor our events. Whether it's big ones like this, or smaller ones. Please drop us an email.

Can I ask another question?

Yes, please do! You can drop Kimberley Cook a direct message in the codebar Slack, you can send us a DM on any of our socials, or send us an email.
